Publishing Policy

Artificial Intelligence Policy

In line with COPE’s position on Authorship and AI tools, and WAME’s recommendations on Chatbots and Generative AI, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs), do not meet authorship criteria.

Authors using AI tools for manuscript writing, creating images or graphics, or data collection and analysis must disclose their use, including the tool’s name and purpose, in the Materials and Methods (or similar) section. Authors remain fully responsible for the content, including any ethical breaches, even in AI-assisted sections. Tools used solely for spelling, grammar, or basic editing do not require disclosure. The journal editor retains the final decision on the appropriateness of AI tool use in submissions or publications.

Peer reviewers must not upload manuscripts into AI tools. If AI tools are used to support any part of the evaluation, this must be transparently disclosed in the peer review report.

Peer review process

All submitted manuscripts undergo a three-step review process (Pre-check, Peer Review, Editor Decision), and the peer review is a double-blind assessment with at least two independent reviewers, in which the referees remain anonymous to the author(s) throughout and following the refereeing process, whilst the identity of the author(s) is likewise unknown to the reviewers. Manuscripts submitted by the editors will be independently reviewed by at least two experts in the relevant field. Editors are required to address all reviewer comments and ensure that the revised manuscript complies with the reviewers’ suggestions before a final decision is made.

Publishing Fees Policy

The corresponding author of each manuscript is responsible for arranging the payment (e.g., through their institution) after the manuscript is editorially accepted. An invoice with detailed payment instructions will be issued to the corresponding author. Local VAT or other applicable taxes will be added to the total fee. Additionally, a 4%–5% transaction fee may apply if payment is made via credit card.

There are no fees for submitting a manuscript or for articles that are not accepted. Additionally, there are no extra charges based on the length of an article, the number of figures, or supplementary data. Certain items, such as corrections, addendums, and retractions, are published free of charge. The publishing fee is used to cover the costs associated with article production and making the article freely available to the public. These costs include unrestricted open access, technology and processing, and post-publication activities.

Waivers or discounts may also be granted to authors from low- and lower-middle-income countries on a case-by-case basis. Authors are encouraged to contact the Editorial Office to inquire about eligibility before submission.
